Top 5 Relocation Hacks to Make your Move a Breeze
Moving is a highly rewarding journey, but this new chapter in your life can be incredibly challenging, as well. Check out the following advice to make your move significantly easier:
1. Pare Down Before You Pack Up
When you move, it’s a sure bet that you are not going to need some of your stuff. Much will depend on the climate surrounding your new digs, versus the weather back home, and much will depend on lifestyle changes that are bound to come with a new place (especially if your new space is smaller than your old place).
Start with one room and move steadily and thoroughly throughout the house by handling one room at a time. Separate your belongings into six different categories:
2. Space Saving Hacks are Money Saving Measures
Beg, borrow, or steal a vacuum sealer like the kind used for sealing and storing food. You can use this to create flat, sealed, water-resistant packages for small, loose items such as jewelry, hair accessories, office supplies, paperwork, and other odds and ends.
Also, pick up some vacuum pack clothing bags at your local dollar store to remove air and squish down, packages of clothing, towels, bed linens, and pillows. Doing this will essentially help you save money on shipping or extra baggage costs.
Use every empty “container” that you have; suitcases, empty vases, decorative boxes, hutches, trunks, and shoes all make great, unconventional (yet clever) packing vessels.
Finally, use your Tetris skills to perfectly pack your boxes and take advantage of every spare ounce of space. By applying the practices of the classic game, you can twist and turn each item until it drops perfectly into place.
Of course, you’ll need to get a little creative as home items tend to be stubborn and oddly-shaped, as opposed to perfectly geometric, but you’ll have fun trying.
3. Yep, There’s an App for That!
Evernote gives you the tools you need to stay organized across all of your devices. Share notes and checklists with your family members, clip articles about your new city, and save information that you might need such as your shipping manifest, flight record locater, itinerary, or insurance policy information.
Moving Van allows you to easily identify the contents of every box you pack when relocating or putting items into storage. As you disconnect and prepare your electronics to pack, take a picture of exactly how everything goes back together prior to unplugging anything.
MagicPlan is an iPhone app that can “magically” create a virtual floor plan that you can use to see if your furniture will fit in a particular place in your new house or apartment.
4. Color-Code Your Packing by Room and Family Member
Color-code your shipping boxes to help keep things organized by using brightly colored duct tape, or colored plastic bins with claw-snap lids. Each family member and room should have a unique color.
Use that same colored duct tape and a permanent marker to create content labels for your boxes. Be sure to place a label on each side of every box.
5. Have a Packing Party
Grab some beer and sodas, order a pizza, and make a packing party out of the job. When you take the chore out of the task by creating a fun, social situation, it can take some of the sting out of leaving your friends and family behind, and lighten the, sometimes overwhelming, burden of getting it all together in time for your move date.
The bonus? Your packing party will present a few great opportunities to gift some of those “donate” items to those you love and care about.
6. Hire Professionals
Make it extra easy by working with a reputable moving company to help you pack up your household and start your life elsewhere. When you know in advance what it will take to get your belongings over to your new home, it can really take the pressure off.
Moving can be a wonderful adventure, but it does take some organization, planning, patience, and persistent optimism. Make it more fun by having a packing party with close friends and family, and make your life easier by putting some of these suggestions in place; you’ll be amazed at the difference these simple measures can make to your peace of mind.
