The “Lovely” Intern Recap: Spending a Summer at LiveLovely.com (Part 3)

Eliza and brother, future intern, Noah

Name: Eliza “Surpriza” Dropkin
Position: Marketing and Community Intern
Age: 21
Hometown: Delmar, NY
School: Trinity / SOAS

What was a typical day at Lovely like for you?
A typical day at Lovely for me involved covering all the social media bases (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, Reddit, etc), running tests on Twitter and Facebook to determine what kinds of posts engage people the most, conducting user support on the website, reaching out to apartment hunters on Twitter, writing witty content for blog posts, attending open houses to talk to potential users, and brainstorming/executing guerrilla marketing projects, like “a Lovely Day in the Park”.

How was working at a startup different than other places you’ve worked?
Working at a startup is very different than anywhere else I have ever worked. Besides interning at a few non-profit organizations, I’ve primarily worked at a lot of summer camps. Working at a startup puts you in a much more intensely driven and competitive environment. It’s exciting and stressful all at the same time. There’s nothing like leaving work with the feeling of having created or accomplished something that will help the company move forward.

What have you learned this summer?
Technically, I’ve learned how to use Illustrator, Photoshop, WordPress, as well as navigating the wacky waters known as Pinterest. I’ve learned the best ways to engage with people online (everyone loves apartment porn, aka. things you will never be able to afford), and the kind of writing that people respond well to. In the office I’ve learned a lot about working with people who have dedicated their lives to a product they believe in, and that nicknames are unavoidable. I’ve also learned quite a bit about the best ways to go about apartment hunting in San Francisco.

What was your main focus this summer?
My main focus this summer was running guerrilla marketing projects and engaging the Lovely community through various online platforms.

What was your favorite part about being an intern at Lovely?
My favorite part about being an intern at Lovely was not feeling like an intern at all! Knowing that my work made a direct contribution to the company motivated and inspired me to do my best.

If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
Bob Dylan.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Flight. The only two things I spend money on are rent and plane tickets.

Would you recommend an internship with Lovely to your friends?
Definitely! This internship has given me more real life workplace experience than I could have ever imagined.

What advice would you give to future interns?
Play hard, work harder.

Thank you to everyone who has tuned in over the last three weeks to find out more about the Lovely interns, and over the last few months to read my blog posts! This has been a great summer, and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. Good luck in all your endeavors, and happy hunting!
