The “Lovely” Intern Recap: Spending a Summer at (Part 2)

Nobody messes with the Rassler…

Name: David “Rassler” Ressler
Position: Data Analytics and Quality Assurance Intern-turned-Engineer
Age: 21
Hometown: Westport, CT
School: Amherst

What was a typical day at Lovely like for you?
It’s hard to describe a typical day at Lovely, since you really don’t know what’s going to happen when you walk in the door in the morning. Normally I would spend hours and hours working on something and leave work completely stumped, only to come in the next morning and figure out the same issue in 15 minutes. It was definitely typical for at least half the office to make a Whole Foods run around lunch time…

How was working at a startup different than other places you’ve worked?
It’s such a different environment. I worked at a bank last summer, where everyone was expected to clock in at a certain time and then clock out at a certain time as well. You were allotted a certain amount of time for lunch, etc. You know…your typical 9-5 job. There aren’t set hours at a startup. The assumption is that you get your shit done, regardless of whether or not that takes you one hour or one week. It’s also cool because everyone enjoys being at work and is so passionate about the product, the company, etc. It’s really nice to be surrounded by such intelligent people who have been brought together for a common goal.

What have you learned this summer?
If I were to tell you everything that I learned this summer, we would be here for a couple months. On the surface, I learned more about software engineering, computers, and the internet than I ever thought possible. From this summer alone, I have a working knowledge of SQL, HTML, CSS, Python, and Javascript. I didn’t even know what half of those things were before this summer, let alone how to use any of them. I’ve also learned that I had a passion for software engineering. And I’ve learned a lot about myself – about being independent, about diligence and perseverance, and about passion. That last bit was corny. Yolo.

What was your main focus this summer?
The better question is – what HAVEN’T I been focusing on this summer? I was hired as a Data Analytics and Quality Assurance intern, so throughout the summer I have been running queries to get data that has been put to use in blog posts, investor reports, etc. My first programming project of the summer was the Lovely Labs Pinterest tool. I also built a first version of a comparables tool to be used by landlords to help them price their apartments. And, now, I’m working on a postings tool so landlords will be able to post listings directly to the site!

What was your favorite part about being an intern at Lovely?
I think my favorite part of being an intern at Lovely was getting to know and work with ridiculously intelligent people. I was constantly blown away by how smart everyone was, and it made being at work exciting and inspiring.

If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be?
Steve Jobs. I’d want to ask him why my iPhone keeps freezing all of the time.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Definitely telekinesis. Maybe that makes me lazy…haters gon hate.

Would you recommend an internship with Lovely to your friends?
I would ABSOLUTELY recommend an internship with Lovely to friends. Hey, I loved my internship so much, I decided to defer senior year to stay 🙂

What advice would you give to future interns?
Don’t be afraid to push yourself. An internship isn’t about showing off how well you can do things you’ve done a million times before. It’s about learning as much as you can, expanding your talents, and having fun!

Stay tuned for part 3!
