The Scoop: Apartment Hunting North of the Panhandle (a.k.a.: NoPa)

NoPa Neighborhood - San Francisco

Best for: A good mix of everything great about San Francisco. You’re right above Golden Gate Park, you’re next to Divisadero St., which was named the “Comeback Neighborhood of the Year” last year by the Huffington Post, and it’s easy to get everywhere from here. You’ve even got built-in tourist sites for when Mom comes to visit — it’s only a few block walk to see the Painted Ladies in Alamo Square or Jerry Garcia’s house in Haight-Ashbury.

Not so good: It’s a neighborhood that’s still learning to clean up its act. You need to be comfortable that some people seem to live in the park, and that there’s enough of a problem with the nearby homeless that Sit-Lie passed in 2010. For some people, they love that Bay to Breakers comes through this neighborhood on Fell, for others, the rowdy race means shaking a fist at the youngsters to “get off my lawn!”

NOPA-alternatives: Alamo Square and the Lower Haight are nearby and have similar feels. They both are filled with beautiful Victorians and have enough local bars, restaurants, and shops close at hand to keep you busy.

:: Open Houses this Weekend North of the Panhandle ::

We didn’t find a lot of studios or one-bedrooms with open houses this weekend. So we hope you’ve carefully picked potential roommates for the following:

142 Cole St. (San Francisco) | Three bedroom / One bathroom | $3,300
Open house: Sun. Feb. 12th @ 11:30am

For $3,300 you can get 3 bedrooms on a quiet street a few blocks from the park. This apartment has killer hardwood floors and built-ins for those of you who like a hearty dose of true San Francisco charm in your apartment.

1937 McAllister St. (San Francisco) | Three bedroom / One bathroom | $3,000
Open House: Sat. Feb. 11th @ 12:00pm

This 3-bedroom apartment for $3,000 would be great for roommates. The kitchen is a little outdated but has a dishwasher, and you’re around the corner from a big supermarket. It looks like they are liberal at letting tenants paint and make the place homey.

1846 Fell St. (San Francisco) | Two bedroom / One bathroom | $2,200
Open House: Sat. Feb. 11th @ 1:30pm

We wish there were more pictures for this 2-bedroom for $2,200, but on paper it looks good. It says there’s a mix of hardwood and carpet, but the winner here is a shared backyard for barbecues. It’s also right on the park, so check carefully for street noise, but that might also mean you have views of trees instead of looking directly into someone else’s window.

What do you think of NoPa? Is it included in your apartment hunt, or are you skipping over it this time? Tweet or email us!
